President Mohammad Khatami and many Iranian and foreign guests will be attending a special commemoration ceremony being held tomorrow at the tomb of Hafez in his hometown Shiraz.
In addition, several Iranian scholars including Homeira Zomorrodi, Ja’far Hamidi, Hassan Zolfaqari, Ali Mohammadi, Mohammad-Ja’far Yahaqi, and Asghar Dadbeh will give speeches on the poetry of Hafez at a session scheduled for Monday at Hafez Hall in Shiraz. Iranian painters and calligraphers will also be creating artworks at the ceremony.
Ceremonies at ancient Persepolis, visits to the Hafezieh (the tomb of Hafez), and performances of Iranian traditional music concerts are also among the programs scheduled for the day.
Hafez Day ceremonies are also being held in India, Japan, Russia, Canada, the United States, France, Spain, and Tajikistan.
Mohammed Shams al-Din (1325?-1389?) was born in Shiraz. He gained the respectful title Hafez, meaning “one who has memorized the Qur'an” as a teacher of the Qur’an.
Hafez's work, collected under the title of the Divan of Hafez, contains more than 500 poems, most of them in the form of a ghazal, a short traditional Persian form that he perfected.
